Radio SLUMBER at Manifesta 15 (Barcelona)

The wind speaks in tongues of undulating waters (…silence sings) is a sound installation by radio SLUMBER and their collaborators. radio SLUMBER – an international diasporic collective – began as a series of informal gatherings organised by an ensemble of women artists, activists and academics from the Asian diaspora. While comparing and contrasting their experiences of racism, xenophobia and isolation, they discussed their social and personal struggles, self-care and nurturing practices. Invited to participate in the pre-biennial research process, radio SLUMBER met with and learned from cultural practitioners from Barcelona who have experienced marginalisation. Together, they spoke about resistance, solidarity and forms of connectivity.  The collective’s research informed their creation of this tent-like support structure, comprised of printed textiles and audio recordings of spells, chants, and powerful from the radio SLUMBER coven and their invited guests. The structure constitutes an intimate temple for shelter and protection. There are four interviews and fragments of texts about feminist diasporic studies, healing in relation to spirituality and decoloniality, aurality, naming and femicide, and witch, available at radioslumber.net soon.
